1. Price Difference
316L cold rolled stainless steel is a high-end premium grade in foreign trade sales, with the highest unit price among conventional cold rolled sheets. Its price is 15% to 25% higher than standard 304 stainless steel. The main reason for the high cost is the addition of precious molybdenum alloy and ultra-low carbon smelting process. Its price is affected by the double fluctuation of nickel and molybdenum raw materials, with large market volatility. Although the procurement cost is high, its extreme corrosion resistance and ultra-long service life make it the preferred material for high-end anti-corrosion engineering and high-standard export projects.
2. Corrosion Resistance
316L has the strongest comprehensive corrosion resistance among all mainstream cold rolled stainless steels. The added molybdenum element significantly improves its resistance to chloride ion erosion, pitting corrosion and crevice corrosion. It can stably resist seawater erosion, coastal salt spray, acid and alkali liquid corrosion, chemical medium corrosion and high-humidity corrosive environment. It is the only conventional grade that can adapt to long-term marine and chemical working conditions, and can maintain stable metallographic structure and surface performance in harsh corrosive environments where 304, 430 and 201 cannot work normally.
3. Application Industry
316L cold rolled sheet is mainly used in high-end and high-corrosion industrial fields. The core application industries include marine engineering equipment, seawater desalination systems, chemical reaction tanks and pipelines, pharmaceutical and medical sanitary equipment, coastal municipal facilities, environmental protection wastewater treatment equipment, petrochemical accessories and high-standard food anti-corrosion equipment. It is mandatory for all coastal, chemical, medical and marine export projects with high anti-corrosion requirements.
4. Service Life
316L stainless steel has an ultra-long service life in harsh environments. Under coastal salt spray and mild chemical corrosion conditions, the stable service life can reach 28 to 35 years. In ordinary outdoor and indoor environments, it can be used permanently without rusting. Even in long-term contact with seawater and corrosive liquid, it will not produce pitting corrosion and aging failure in a short time. It greatly reduces the later maintenance and replacement cost of high-end engineering projects.
5. Processing Performance
316L low-carbon stainless steel retains the excellent ductility and processing characteristics of austenitic stainless steel. It has basically the same bending, deep drawing, stamping and forming performance as 304, and its welding performance is better. The ultra-low carbon design effectively avoids welding intergranular corrosion and welding crack problems. It can meet the processing requirements of high-precision equipment parts, sanitary finished products and complex anti-corrosion structural parts, and is the preferred high-end processing grade for precision anti-corrosion products exported overseas.
