Cold rolled stainless steel sheets have four mainstream commercial surface finishes: 2B, BA, HL Hairline and 8K Mirror. Different surface treatments lead to obvious gaps in procurement cost, corrosion resistance, applicable industries, service life and post-processing performance. This article analyzes each finish for foreign trade customized order reference.
1. Price Difference
Under identical grade and thickness, price ranking from low to high: 2B < HL Hairline < BA < 8K Mirror
2B Finish: Standard base surface after cold rolling, annealing and pickling with one-pass temper rolling. Mature mass production process without extra polishing procedures, the most cost-effective surface for stock bulk orders.
HL Hairline Finish: Based on 2B sheet with linear abrasive brushing treatment, moderate extra polishing cost, 8%–15% higher than 2B, widely used for mid-end architectural decoration orders.
BA Bright Annealed Finish: Annealed under inert protective atmosphere without pickling, requiring precise temperature control of bright annealing furnace, 12%–20% higher in price than standard 2B.
8K Mirror Finish: Multi-step fine mechanical polishing on 2B or BA substrate, high abrasives and labor consumption, 25%–40% more expensive than 2B, only for high-end luxury decoration customized projects.
2. Corrosion Resistance
Anti-corrosion performance ranking: 8K Mirror > BA > 2B > HL Hairline
8K Mirror: Ultra-smooth surface with Ra ≤0.05μm, no tiny gaps to trap dust, water and salt particles. The tight passive film delivers optimal long-term anti-corrosion effect even in coastal humid environments.
BA Finish: Uniform bright smooth surface with Ra 0.05–0.2μm, few surface micro-pits, hard to accumulate corrosive medium, stable anti-rust performance in medium-humidity outdoor scenes.
2B Finish: Matte uniform surface with Ra 0.1–0.5μm, standard qualified anti-corrosion capacity for general indoor and urban outdoor environments. Minor dirt accumulation will slightly weaken rust resistance without regular cleaning.
HL Hairline: Continuous linear grinding grooves on the surface, where dust, water vapor and chloride easily deposit. Without regular wiping, local oxidation and tiny rust spots will form at hairline grooves in long-term humid and salt fog environments.
3. Application Industry
2B Cold Rolled Finish
Universal industrial base surface for mass manufacturing: kitchen equipment blanks, home appliance raw panels, food machinery casings, general mechanical enclosures, environmental protection equipment shells and raw material substrates for secondary polishing. It covers over 70% of cold rolled sheet stock export orders.
HL Hairline Finish
Architectural decorative exclusive surface: elevator cabin panels, building door panels, indoor wall cladding, handrail decorative sheets, stainless steel cabinet surfaces and hotel decorative partitions, favored by mid-range construction engineering buyers.
BA Bright Annealed Finish
High-end household and sanitary equipment: premium refrigerator panels, stainless steel cookware, medical equipment shells, water dispenser casings and high-standard food contact parts requiring bright clean surfaces.
8K Mirror Finish
Luxury high-end decoration: commercial building curtain walls, luxury mall decorative walls, hotel lobby decorative panels, elevator mirror panels and high-end jewelry display frames, mainly for customized small-batch high-value export orders.
4. Service Life
Taking 304 grade cold rolled sheet as uniform reference:
Dry indoor environment: All four finishes can serve stably for more than 20 years with regular simple cleaning.
Ordinary urban outdoor environment: 8K and BA maintain intact surface for 18–23 years; 2B lasts 15–20 years; HL hairline only keeps good appearance for 12–16 years, with easy discoloration along grinding lines.
Coastal salt fog environment: 8K mirror and BA finish have stable service life of 16–22 years; 2B shortens to 10–14 years; HL hairline generates obvious discoloration and pitting corrosion within 8–12 years, requiring frequent maintenance.
5. Processing Performance
2B Finish: Best secondary processing adaptability. Supports all post-treatments including brushing, mirror polishing, bending, deep drawing, welding and cutting, no damage to base surface during machining, the preferred substrate for all customized surface orders.
HL Hairline Finish: Suitable for simple cutting, fixed-size trimming and flat splicing. Repeated deep bending and heavy stamping will scratch linear hairline texture, welding marks are obvious and hard to repair, not fit for complex forming processes.
BA Finish: Smooth bright surface easy to scratch during processing, must attach thick protective PE film before cutting and bending. Welding discoloration is prominent, requiring post-weld polishing to restore brightness, moderate processing flexibility.
8K Mirror Finish: Extremely sensitive to scratches and fingerprints. Only allow fixed-size cutting with fully covered protective film; bending, stamping and welding will leave irreversible traces, almost no complex secondary processing available, limited to flat decorative panels only.
