Products Description

ASTM A312 TP316Ti stainless steel pipe is designed for industrial piping applications where corrosion resistance, elevated-temperature performance, and material stability are important. TP316Ti is a titanium-stabilized austenitic stainless steel and is commonly specified for chemical processing, petrochemical equipment, heat exchangers, power-generation systems, and other demanding process applications.

ASTM A312/A312M covers seamless, straight-seam welded, and heavily cold-worked welded austenitic stainless steel pipe intended for high-temperature and general corrosive service. The specification also includes requirements related to heat treatment, mechanical testing, and hydrostatic or nondestructive electrical testing.

TP316Ti is a titanium-stabilized version of 316-series austenitic stainless steel. The titanium addition helps stabilize carbon and reduce the tendency for chromium carbide precipitation during prolonged exposure to elevated temperatures.

316Ti is identified by several equivalent designations depending on the applicable material standard, including UNS S31635 and EN 1.4571.

Compared with conventional 316 stainless steel, the titanium stabilization of 316Ti makes the material particularly interesting for applications where the pipe may experience elevated temperatures for extended periods.

The main advantages of TP316Ti pipe include:

Good general corrosion resistance

Good resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in suitable environments

Improved resistance to sensitization during prolonged elevated-temperature exposure

Good mechanical properties

Suitable for chemical and process equipment

Available in seamless and welded forms

Compatible with a wide range of industrial piping configurations

The actual material selection should always consider temperature, pressure, chemical concentration, chloride content, welding conditions, and the applicable design code.

ASTM A312 TP316Ti Pipe Specifications

For industrial procurement, the pipe specification normally includes the material grade, manufacturing type, outside diameter, wall thickness or schedule, length, surface condition, and inspection requirements.

Common requirements include:

Item Typical Specification
Product TP316Ti Stainless Steel Pipe
Standard ASTM A312 / ASME SA312
UNS S31635
EN 1.4571
Pipe Type Seamless / Welded
Schedule 5S / 10S / 40S / 80S and other applicable sizes
Length Standard / Fixed / Custom
Surface Annealed & Pickled / Polished
Inspection Chemical / Mechanical / Dimensional / NDT
Certification MTC / EN 10204 3.1

Pipe dimensions can be specified according to applicable dimensional standards. ASTM A312 also references standardized welded and seamless stainless steel pipe dimensions associated with ASME B36.19.

316Ti Pipe for High-Temperature Applications

One of the reasons engineers consider 316Ti is its titanium stabilization.

During prolonged heating, chromium carbide precipitation can occur in susceptible stainless steels. Titanium preferentially combines with carbon and helps stabilize the material, reducing the risk of sensitization under suitable service conditions.

This makes 316Ti a potential choice for selected high-temperature process piping applications.

However, there is no single maximum operating temperature that applies to every 316Ti pipe installation. The allowable temperature depends on pressure, wall thickness, service medium, design code, material condition, and project requirements.

316Ti vs 316L Stainless Steel Pipe

316Ti and 316L are both widely used corrosion-resistant austenitic stainless steels, but they are not identical.

Feature 316Ti 316L
Stabilization Titanium stabilized Low-carbon grade
UNS S31635 S31603
EN Grade 1.4571 1.4404
High-Temperature Exposure Advantageous for selected prolonged elevated-temperature applications Widely used for general applications
Welding Good Excellent
General Corrosion Resistance Good Good
Typical Selection High-temperature process equipment and piping Chemical, marine, food and general process piping

The better grade depends on the actual operating conditions rather than simply choosing one material as universally superior.

Applications of ASTM A312 TP316Ti Pipe

TP316Ti stainless steel pipe can be used in a range of industrial systems, including:

Chemical processing

Petrochemical equipment

Process piping

Heat exchangers

Power-generation equipment

High-temperature process systems

Pressure equipment

Corrosive fluid transfer systems

ASTM A312 is specifically intended for austenitic stainless steel pipe used in high-temperature and general corrosive service.
