1. Price Difference

Titanium alloy bars have a much higher price level than stainless steel bars. Taking mainstream TC4 titanium alloy as an example, its unit price is 6 to 10 times that of regular 304 and 316L stainless steel bars. Titanium production adopts vacuum smelting and complex forging processes with high raw material loss and energy consumption. In contrast, stainless steel enjoys mature mass production technology, large output and highly competitive bulk price.

2. Corrosion Resistance

  • Titanium Alloy Bar: Top-tier corrosion resistance. The stable passivation film enables it to resist erosion from seawater, chloride ions, dilute acid and alkali. It will not generate rust or pitting corrosion even in harsh marine and chemical environments.

  • Stainless Steel Bar (316L): Good performance against atmospheric corrosion and weak acid. But it cannot withstand long-term immersion in seawater and high-chloride environments, and is prone to pitting and crevice corrosion after long-term service.

3. Application Industry

  • Titanium Alloy Bar: Mainly used in high-end fields including aerospace lightweight structural parts, medical implant devices, deep-sea marine equipment and anti-corrosion components for special chemical projects.

  • Stainless Steel Bar: Widely used in architectural decoration, food processing machinery, general chemical equipment, non-implant medical accessories and conventional automotive parts.

4. Service Life

  • Titanium Alloy Bar: Ultra-long service life. It maintains stable performance for 20 to 50 years in seawater and corrosive chemical environments, with almost no performance attenuation caused by corrosion.

  • Stainless Steel Bar: Medium service life. It can work for 10 to 15 years in ordinary atmospheric environments, while the service life is only 3 to 5 years in seawater, requiring regular maintenance and inspection.

5. Processing Performance

  • Titanium Alloy Bar: Average machinability. It features low thermal conductivity and is easy to stick to cutting tools during machining, requiring special cutters and dedicated cutting fluid. Welding must be completed under strict argon protection, leading to higher processing costs.

  • Stainless Steel Bar: Excellent comprehensive processability. It is easy to cut, drill and weld with mature supporting processes. The processing difficulty and overall cost are much lower than titanium alloy.

Selection Suggestion

Choose titanium alloy bars if you have sufficient budget and demand for light weight, high corrosion resistance and long service life. For conventional working conditions with cost control requirements, 316L stainless steel bars are the more cost-effective choice.
