1. Price Difference

In terms of market price of the same specification, the ranking from low to high is: 201 < 430 < 304 < 316L.201 stainless steel bar adopts low-nickel and high-manganese formula, so it has the lowest cost. Its price is about 35% to 40% lower than 304, and is barely affected by nickel price fluctuations, ideal for large-volume low-budget procurement.430 is a nickel-free ferritic grade, priced around 20% to 28% cheaper than 304. With stable raw material cost, it is a cost-effective choice for medium and low-end civilian products.304 acts as the market benchmark. Its price fluctuates closely with international nickel and chromium prices, with high market transparency and sufficient supply for most medium and high-end projects.316L is added with molybdenum and produced via ultra-low carbon smelting. Its price is 15% to 25% higher than 304, ranking the highest among conventional grades due to premium alloy elements and sophisticated production techniques.

2. Corrosion Resistance

The anti-corrosion performance from weak to strong: 201 < 430 < 304 < 316L.201 has the poorest corrosion resistance. It can only stay rust-free in fully dry indoor environments, and is prone to pitting and rust spots in humid air, salt fog and slightly corrosive conditions.430 performs well against oxidation in dry atmosphere, but its resistance to chloride and salt spray is weak. It will corrode quickly in coastal areas and chemical volatile environments.304 features balanced overall corrosion resistance. It resists atmospheric rust, rainwater and fresh water erosion effectively, and works stably in general outdoor and food processing environments, while failing to withstand long-term strong chloride and acid-base corrosion.316L stands out with excellent anti-corrosion capability. The molybdenum element greatly enhances resistance to seawater, salt fog, acid and alkali media, adapting to various harsh corrosive working conditions that other grades cannot cope with.

3. Application Industry

201 Stainless Steel BarMainly used for indoor decoration and low-load non-corrosive parts, such as indoor handrail frames, furniture support rods, decorative fasteners and ordinary indoor hardware accessories. It is widely exported for low-cost interior engineering projects.

430 Stainless Steel BarPrimarily applied in home appliances and general hardware manufacturing. Typical products include oven and gas appliance components, washing machine fittings, standard bolts, nuts and tool accessories, dominating the medium-end civil hardware market.

304 Stainless Steel BarA universal grade with the widest application range. It covers food & pharmaceutical equipment parts, sanitary hardware, outdoor building supports, municipal facilities, general mechanical shafts and environmental protection equipment parts, serving most medium and high-end industrial and civil export businesses.

316L Stainless Steel BarSpecially for high-end anti-corrosion and sanitary fields, including marine engineering components, seawater desalination equipment, chemical pipeline accessories, medical precision parts, wastewater treatment devices and coastal municipal facilities. It is a must-have material for harsh industrial environments.

4. Service Life

Service life varies greatly depending on service environments and material grades. In dry indoor conditions: 201 lasts 6–8 years, 430 lasts 10–15 years, 304 can be used for more than 30 years, and 316L achieves permanent stable service. In ordinary urban outdoor environments: 201 fails within 2–3 years due to rust, 430 has a service life of 6–8 years, 304 runs steadily for 18–25 years. In coastal salt fog and mild chemical environments: Only 316L can maintain normal performance for 28–35 years; other grades will suffer obvious corrosion and performance degradation in a short period.

5. Processing Performance

201: High hardness and severe work hardening, poor ductility. It is only suitable for simple cutting and rough turning. Cracks and burrs easily occur during precision machining, bending and welding.430: Excellent cutting and turning performance with smooth finished surface, perfect for mass production of standard fasteners. However, poor toughness leads to cracking during complex bending and stamping.304: Outstanding comprehensive processability. It has good toughness and ductility, adapting to precision turning, thread making, drilling, fine polishing and various welding processes, with high yield rate for complex parts.316L: Retains the superior forming performance of austenitic steel, and its ultra-low carbon structure avoids welding intergranular corrosion. It is the preferred choice for high-precision and high-standard customized processing.
