1. Price Difference
304 and 316L are mainstream industrial-grade stainless steel bars for high-standard export projects, with moderate to high pricing. As the market benchmark grade, 304 stainless steel bar has transparent and stable pricing, 18%–25% lower than high-end 316L. Its price is closely linked to international nickel and chromium prices, with obvious market fluctuation and high trading liquidity, suitable for medium and high-end long-term bulk orders. 316L is a premium molybdenum-containing ultra-low carbon grade, priced 15%–25% higher than 304. The addition of molybdenum alloy and sophisticated smelting process raises raw material costs, and its price is affected by both nickel and molybdenum futures. Though with higher procurement cost, it is irreplaceable for high-corrosion industrial and marine engineering projects.
2. Corrosion Resistance
304 and 316L have far superior corrosion resistance than 201 and 430. 304 austenitic stainless steel bar has balanced comprehensive anti-corrosion performance, resisting atmospheric oxidation, rainwater erosion, fresh water and mild humid environment corrosion effectively. It can pass 48–96 hours standard salt spray test, adapting to urban outdoor environments, food workshops and general industrial scenarios stably. 316L stainless steel bar with molybdenum element has the strongest corrosion resistance among conventional grades, significantly improving resistance to chloride pitting, crevice corrosion, seawater and acid-base medium erosion. It can operate stably for a long time in coastal salt fog, marine immersion, chemical volatile and wastewater treatment environments, solving the rust and failure problems of ordinary stainless steel in harsh working conditions.
3. Application Industry
304 and 316L stainless steel bars dominate industrial, sanitary, outdoor and high-corrosion fields. 304 is a universal industrial grade, widely used in food and pharmaceutical equipment structural parts, sanitary hardware, outdoor building support structures, municipal engineering facilities, general mechanical shafts and fasteners, environmental protection equipment and petrochemical conventional accessories, covering most medium and high-end civilian and industrial export scenarios. 316L is exclusive for high-end harsh environments, applied in marine engineering structural parts, seawater desalination equipment, chemical reaction kettle accessories, medical precision parts, coastal municipal facilities and wastewater treatment equipment. It is the mandatory material for high-standard sanitary, anti-corrosion and marine engineering export projects.
4. Service Life
304 and 316L have ultra-long service life and excellent structural durability. 304 stainless steel bar can be used for more than 30 years without aging and rusting in dry indoor environments, and maintains stable performance for 18–25 years in urban outdoor atmospheric environments. It is the best choice for long-term outdoor engineering and permanent building supporting structures. 316L has outstanding durability in corrosive environments, with a stable service life of 28–35 years in coastal salt fog and mild chemical corrosion conditions. It hardly suffers from pitting corrosion and structural failure in long-term harsh working conditions, greatly reducing later maintenance and replacement costs for high-end industrial projects.
5. Processing Performance
304 and 316L austenitic stainless steel bars have excellent comprehensive processing performance, far exceeding civil-grade materials. 304 features high toughness, good ductility and low work hardening speed, suitable for precision turning, thread processing, drilling, milling, fine polishing, bending and complex welding. It has high finished product yield and stable dimensional accuracy, meeting the processing requirements of most precision mechanical parts and sanitary products. 316L ultra-low carbon design avoids welding intergranular corrosion and crack defects, with better welding performance than 304. It supports high-precision processing and complex forming, and is widely used for customized high-end industrial and medical precision parts in global export business.
